Parenting Articles: Introduction |
Whether single or not, all parents need opportunities to advance their careers and the education to make that advancement possible. It is very hard competing in the job market. It is a demoralizing experience to be told you are unqualified for a position that you are experienced to do, but because you do not have a degree, you are not considered qualified. Being told constantly that you are unqualified can damage a single parent's self-esteem and unmotivated them. This is not a good thing. It is hard to think that you are not valued enough to be given the opportunity to advance yourself, especially if you have been on a particular job for a number of years. Consistency, performance and ability by single parents to do their jobs should count for something, but in this competitive job market, it is the advanced skills that education provides that makes the difference in your paycheck. As a woman the struggle is hard and as a single parent the struggles are harder physically, financially, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. In a family where the mother is the sole provider it is hard paying the high cost of living and maintaining a family, especially if she only has a high school education with limited training. Remember that a single parent is not always a single parent by choice. Government can help. To start with, by investing in the Turks and Caicos Community College here on Providenciales. Single parents and all parents should insist that the government put programs in place that will assist every interested person in furthering their education and upgrading their skills. For single parents to benefit from the developing economy on Providenciales, they must upgrade their skills. They cannot afford to be complacent. Yes, they may sometimes have a good job but they should not stop there. Technology is changing every day and if your skills have not been upgraded you may be replaced on the job or your position made redundant. In addition to the courses being offered now at the Turks and Caicos Community College here on Providenciales, courses in Business Entrepreneurial, Social Work, Advertising, Drafting, Broadcasting, Journalism and Real Estate, just to name a few should also be introduced. Single parents might wish to find themselves in this growing market, but in order to have the training and be competitive; programs at the Turks and Caicos Community College must exist and provide appropriate training for these jobs. When these programs are in place a single parent working a nine to five job can have a sibling watch his or her child while he or she attends a class at night. A single parent with an evening job can go to a class in the morning and still have time to spend with his or her child and go to work at night. In this way single parents can upgrade their skills and take care of their families at the same time. In order for this to happen, the government must expand the Turks and Caicos Community College on Providenciales and put these programs in place. It is the government's duty to educate its people. On completion of his or her studies, the single parent is then able to go in the job market with marketable skills. An increase in a one's educational level results in an increase in one's earning potential. Whether a single parent or not we would all like to be able to provide a good standard of living for our family and ourselves. Single parents; Education is the key. Unlock your earnings potential. Do if for you, your children and your community and do it today.
