MOTHERS DAY SPEECH
May 9th, 2004
By: The Hon.  Karen L. Delancy
Minister of Social Services and Gender Affairs

Mothers in the Turks and Caicos Islands play a very important roe in the development of our country. We look upon our youth as our future, but without a strong sense of self-esteem, self-confidence and self worth our children will not have the moral strength to want to improve themselves and their country.

A Mother’s job today is a tough one, balancing a career and family. She has to provide an effective role model to her children.  Instill in them the knowledge that they should always aspire to be the best that they can, no matter what their chosen career may be. She has to teach them self-respect. Without this, a child cannot respect others.  She has to encourage them daily, take interest in their school work and support them at all times, especially if they are not doing so well. She has to make sure that they are physically fit by getting them away from the TV and out in the fresh air.  The number of organized sports teams is growing everyday, helping to teach teamwork and co-operation along with building strong bodies. Above all she has to give them pride in themselves and their country.

Her job never finishes. Her children are a reflection of herself. The strong self-confident women who make up this wonderful country of ours must continue to look to the future and bring out the best in their children everyday, even when those children have grown to be adults.
