Ms. Karen L. Delancy an advocate for the people of the Turks and Caicos IslandsTurks and Caicos Islands

Hon. Karen Delancy, Deputy Speaker, House of Assembly, Turks and Caicos Islands was born on Providenciales, in the settlement of The Bight, in The Turks and Caicos Islands. Also, Hon. Karen Delancy, Elected Member of Parliament, The Bight Constituency. Her family migrated to Freeport, Grand Bahamas where Ms. Delancy received her early childhood education at the Martin Town Primary School. At age 11 she sat and successfully passed the Bahamas Common Entrance Examination to attend the Eight-Mile Rock Secondary School.

While attending the Eight Mile Rock Secondary School she successfully obtained five Bahamas Junior Certificates in Arithmetic, English Language, English Literature, Religious Knowledge and History. Ms. Delancy later attended the Hawksbill High School, in Grand Bahamas and on completion of her studies, obtained a Diploma in Business and Commerce, G.C.E and R.S.A passes in Mathematics, English Language, Business English, English Literature, Short Hand and Bookkeeping Stage 1.

Ms. Delancy later attended The Freeport High Evening Institute where she studied, typing, Office Procedures, letter writing and Introduction to Business. Ms. Delancy also holds a Certificate in Sociology from CalCampus Community College, in Rochester New York.

Ms Delancy worked at The Lucayan Towers North in Freeport Bahamas as a Front Desk Clerk and later moved to Ernie's Electric where she worked as a Secretary.

In 1984 she returned to the Turks and Caicos Islands working at Napa Auto Parts as a Secretary. Ms. Delancy later moved to Provident Limited where she worked as an Executive Office Administrator through 2003.

In the 1999 Country's General Elections Ms.Delancy represented the 10th Electoral District of The Bight, on Providenciales. Ms. Delancy campaigned for better opportunities for families. Her campaign slogan read: Intellectually Through Education, Physically Through Health and Nutrition and Mentally though Responsibilities.

Ms. Delancy hosted a weekly television program called Parenting. This brought together the experts in the community who shared their knowledge. This weekly program provided a format for discussions on how to cope with raising teens and young adults. Her weekly newspaper column, radio program and Parenting Seminars brought attention to Teen and Single Parenting, Continuing Education for Teen Parents and Welfare Benefits for Children.

Her newspaper column "For the Health of It" brought attention to health issues such as Breast Cancer, Child Abuse, Spousal Abuse, Menopause in Women and Men, Teen Suicide, Depression, Down syndrome, A.I.D.S and other STD's.

In May of 2000, The Ministry of Women's Affairs and Women in Development recognized Ms. Delancy for her contribution to Social Causes in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Ms. Delancy served for three terms as Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Education Committee. She served as Secretary of the Police Advisory Committee and Chairman of The Bight Community Awareness Committee. A committee focused on beautifying the community of The Bight.

Ms. Delancy is a Baptist by religion, a former Sunday School Teacher, a single mother of two girls, Sarhea and Simone, two boys, Selznick and Savian, grand daughter, Keondra and an adopted daughter Abigail.

In August of 2001 Ms. Delancy began her first year as an International Law student, studying Family Law from the CalCampus Community College for International students. Upon completion of her studies, she plans to open a Help Center in The Bight.

Hon. Karen Delancy was elected to Parliament on April 24th, 2003. She was reelected again on February 9th, 2007.

In her spare time Ms. Delancy enjoy, cooking, singing, reading, writing, meeting people and travelling.
